Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must talk less and do more work. By talking less, your energy grows greatly. Through that, memory and concentration grow too. As energy wastes away, memory and even the strength of the body waste away too. What is the reason some students cannot write properly in their examinations? Their memory has waned. Why? They read on one side, look at the newspaper on another, and listen to the cricket commentary on the radio on another. Reading in this way, without concentration, how will what you read stay in memory! Students today spoil their energy through bad habits. Their concentration has waned. In ancient times there were no papers and no pens. The students of those days, in the āśramas, listened with concentration to what the gurus taught and kept it in their hearts for ever. Today there are books, papers, pens, everything, but the students have no memory at all. In the old days, if you bought a few things at a shop, the shopkeeper could add up their total price in a moment and tell you. But today, even for the smallest sum, they press a calculator. Why not make use of the brain God has given! The brain itself is the real computer.

Unity, purity, divinity

Young women and men! First of all, nourish these physical, mental and spiritual powers. If you nourish all three, there is no God greater than you. Set your body to good deeds. Give room in your mind to good resolves. Place your Buddhi in God. The body, the mind and the Buddhi are all instruments. There is One who drives them. Recognise That. Do not depend on others. God alone can help you. That is His own work. You too, always give help and nothing else. Hurt no one. This is the essence of the Rāmāyaṇa, the Bhārata, the Bhāgavata and the other sacred books. Do not quarrel among yourselves. Unity itself is great strength. Where there is unity and purity, there is divinity. If your heart is pure, whatever you desire will come to you at once. For instance, if you want a pen, it will come into your pocket at once. It will surely come, it will come. If you have just a pure heart, there is nothing in the world you cannot achieve.

Know yourselves

To know God is beyond anyone's power. When you cannot know yourself, how then can you know God? Uma Bharati said in her speech that those who come to Puttaparthi come to know God. But you could come to know God only if you knew what kind of being He is and how He is. So you need not come here to know God. Even if you come here with such an intention, it is of no use. First of all, try to know yourselves. You have come only to know yourselves! To know Me is beyond anyone's power.

Duṣyanta and Bharata

Śakuntalā, in the āśrama of the sage Kaṇva, took refuge in her guru and practised sādhana. One day Duṣyanta came to the āśrama. He saw Śakuntalā and married her. The son born to her is Bharata. How great the difference between the nature of that Bharata and the nature of his father Duṣyanta! Duṣyanta was a great king. He was educated in the city. So he picked up nothing but city habits. Bharata was a dweller of the āśrama. Because he was born, grew up and learned in the atmosphere of the āśrama, he could nourish his character.
