Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But whoever forgets Prema for God and sinks into selfish Prema, his life writhes in pain. It scorches and shrivels. Bhārata is the stronghold of the Vedas, the home ground of yajña, yāga and the other sacred rites. This land, the birthplace of the Vedas, is falling into anguish today: what is the reason? The ancients believed that Satya alone is God; they developed sacrifice and Prema and knew so much Ānanda. But students today, and the educated too, think that money alone is God, and are deluded into thinking that Ānanda lies in power alone.

Food is Brahman

The divine power in man cannot be described as being like this or like that. It is the power of Viṣṇu; it is the power of Brahman. The Veda has said, “Satyaṃ jñānam anantaṃ Brahma.” The Jñāna that neither changes nor is reshaped in the three times is the very principle of Brahman. The Veda has also declared, “Prajñānaṃ Brahma.” This is what is called Constant integrated awareness. From this Brahman came forth space; from space, air; from air, fire; from fire, water; from water, earth; from earth, the plants; and from the plants, food. From food itself man was born. When we enquire in this way, it becomes clear that man and Brahman share a close bond and kinship. That is why Kṛṣṇa said, “Mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīvabhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ” (all the beings in this world are My eternal parts).

Without Brahman there is no space; without space, no air; without air, no fire; without fire, no water; without water, no earth; without earth, no plants grow; and without a harvest of plants, no food is to be had. Food is man's very foundation. With this in view the Veda said, “Annaṃ Brahma.” Who is Brahman? Not the four-faced Brahmā you see in pictures. The immense power itself is Brahman. The power that pervades everywhere is Brahman. Air is Brahman. Water is Brahman. Earth is Brahman, fire is Brahman, space is Brahman. The five elements are the very forms of Brahman. All of them are in the human body itself. So God does not exist apart from man.
