Passage 4

In plain words

So it seems to me that hardships alone are good. I am ready to bear any number of hardships. But Your Prema, at least, must not waver in the least. Grant me Bhakti that never forgets You, and the strength to bear hardships,” she asked. She had placed her whole life on Kṛṣṇa alone. No one has gone through the hardships the Pāṇḍavas went through. That is why they could remain always in the presence of God.

The mark of a true devotee

After the Mahābhārata war, 42 years went by. One day Arjuna was coming back from Dvārakā. In what circumstances was he coming? There, ruin had broken out in the Yādava clan. All the Yādavas had died. Kṛṣṇa too had left His body. Arjuna was coming with this news. Seeing Arjuna coming, Kuntī Devī sat up. Dharmaja went out to meet Arjuna: “Arjuna! How is our Kṛṣṇa? Our friend, our kinsman, our brother-in-law, our God: He is well, is He not?” he said. Arjuna cried, “Where is Kṛṣṇa any more, brother!” and sank down in grief he could not hold back. Hearing this news through Dharmaja, Kuntī Devī said three times, ‘Kṛṣṇa is gone!’, fell on Dharmaja's lap and gave up her life. Dharmaja looked at his mother's body, fallen on his lap: “Mother! Have you gone to look for Kṛṣṇa? It seems to me that you have gone only to look for Kṛṣṇa,” he grieved deeply.

“All this time we have lived through Kṛṣṇa alone; through Kṛṣṇa's help alone we won the war and gained name and fame. What use to us now is a life without Kṛṣṇa?” he thought, and at once called Bhīma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva. He told Bhīma to make fitting arrangements for their mother's funeral rites. He told Arjuna to make the arrangements needed for Parīkṣit's coronation. To Nakula and Sahadeva he said, “Make everything ready for the Great Journey.” How wondrous! The funeral rites for Kuntī Devī's body, the coronation of Parīkṣit and the Great Journey of the Pāṇḍavas: all three took place on one and the same day. Who could do such a thing? It is possible only for supreme devotees like Dharmaja, who have God's grace. Hardships come and go like passing clouds. You must not shed tears at hardship, nor swell with joy at happiness.
