Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You know this: the great and virtuous Sāvitrī brought her dead husband Satyavān back to life by prayer. Its inner meaning is that Sāvitrī protects those who lead their lives on the path of Satya. And Sarasvatī is the embodiment of the goddess of speech.

Man must win the grace of Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī and Sarasvatī and make his life worthwhile. First of all, you must attain purity of speech. Only when the word is good does life become good. It has been said, “If the foot slips, no harm is done; if the tongue slips, it is hell, my friend!” That is why the ṛṣis of old kept to measured speech. “Too much talk, loss of wits; measured talk, great delight.” With too much talk there is room to slip into Asatya. So you must cut down your words, foster truth and earn a good name.

The Body, the Life-breath and the Power of Prajñā

Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī and Sarasvatī are in every human being. What does “Bhūrbhuvassuvaḥ” in the Gāyatrī mantra mean? Bhūḥ means the earth. The earth means a gathering together of substances (materials). This body too is just such a gathering of substances. So ‘Bhūḥ’ means the body itself! That is ‘materialisation’. ‘Bhuvaḥ’ means the life-breath. It is the life-breath that moves the body. That is ‘vibration’. Then what does ‘Suvaḥ’ mean? This itself is the power of Prajñāna. This is what has been called Constant Integrated Awareness. This same power has been called ‘radiation’. So the three worlds named in ‘Bhūrbhuvassuvaḥ’ are all within man himself. For the body, the life-breath and Jñāna, the body itself is the basis. You must not misuse so sacred a body. Humanness is most sacred. “Jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabhaṃ.” Of all births, the human birth is the most exalted, the most gracious and the most noble. For what purpose has God given this body? “Śarīra mādyaṃ khalu dharma sādhanaṃ”: this body has been given for no other purpose than the practice of Dharma. So you must foster human values, do good deeds and make your birth worthwhile. What are human values? You do not have to acquire them anew. They were born with you, and they are right there with you. But because you do not put them into practice, they lie hidden away. Rather than giving ‘tons and tons’ of lectures, it is enough if you put a single ‘ounce’ into practice.
