Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must hold in check joy, sorrow, excitement and anger. ‘Sukhaduḥkhe samekṛtvā lābhālābhau jayājayau’: you must accept joy and sorrow with an equal eye. That is true tapas. Whatever service you do, you must do it free of desire. A spirit free of desire is itself tapas.

The seventh is the flower of dhyāna. What is dhyāna? Is it sitting in the lotus posture with your eyes closed and thinking of God? That is dhyāna of the ordinary kind. That too is needed! But that is not what dhyāna is. As water becomes one with milk, your mind must merge in God. Iron put into fire turns wholly into fire itself. In the same way, your mind must become one with the thought of God. This is just what they called “Brahmavid brahmaiva bhavati”. If you sit in the lotus posture morning and evening and think of God for a few minutes or so, how does that become dhyāna? You must think of God always, at all times, everywhere. Whatever work you do, you must keep God as your goal. That is true dhyāna. If you set yourself some fixed span of time and think of God within it, that becomes ‘part-time’ Bhakti. Grace does come. If God's grace is to be yours for ever, you must develop ‘full-time’ Bhakti.

The eighth is the flower of Satya. This one is very important. This world was born of Satya alone, is sustained by Satya alone, and merges into Satya alone. ‘Trikālābādhyaṃ satyaṃ’: Satya is what never changes. Satya is what exists for ever. Even if everything vanishes, Satya alone remains for ever. That very Satya is God. So you must live by Satya alone. With Satya alone you must reach your end. Only when you worship God with these eight kinds of flowers will He receive them with delight and grant the boons you ask for. Without offering the flowers dear to God, there is no use in offering any number of flowers that wither, drop, burn away and fall to ruin.

Teach the Senses a Lesson

For every human being, mastery of the senses is of great importance. Through mastery of the senses you can achieve anything at all. The root cause of the turmoil and unrest in the world today is nothing but man's lack of mastery over the senses! You must teach the senses a lesson. “O eyes! Till now you have seen so many sights.
