In plain words
Are you still not satisfied? At least now, try to see God,” you must teach the eyes. “O ears! You are listening to needless things. You show great eagerness for the gossip of the town. What have you gained from listening to it?” you must ask the ears.
When time hangs heavy and there is the gossip of the town, you are ready at once, and with such great care; when the talk of God is told so sweetly, you will not stay attentive, O ears!
Everything you hear and all the sights you see get printed on your heart. If the heart is soiled, life itself becomes useless. The other day I told the devotees who came from Visakhapatnam: the heart is like a pen. Whether it is the words you write with a pen or the lines you draw, they take on the very colour of whatever ink you fill it with. So when you fill the pen called the heart with the ink called Prema, the thoughts you think, the words you speak and the deeds you do will all be full of Prema. God wants you to lead such a sacred life, full of Prema. When the priest in the temple worships God with many kinds of flowers, God: “O priest! Is this what you have learned all this time? You bring roses and jasmine by the lorry-load and worship Me with them. But what is the use? All these flowers will have withered by tomorrow. These are not what I want. I want the flower of Satya; I want the flower of Śānti; I want the flower of forbearance. Those never wither and never drop. Worship Me with those flowers,” He says.
What God Wants Is Service to Society
Embodiments of Prema! Many people perform worship with great Bhakti and śraddhā. But this is not what God wants. Worship belongs to your own personal sādhanas. What God wants is service to society. Only when you serve can you receive Ānanda.
