In plain words
At once our legs walk to that tree. Once there, the waist bends, the hand takes up a stone, and the shoulder throws it with all its strength toward the fruit. The fruit falls down. Then the fingers catch hold of it and put it into the mouth. The teeth chew it and send it down into the stomach. In this way the fruit on the tree reached the stomach only because all the limbs worked together, did it not! When there is such unity in the family too, you can achieve any great task at all.
In every home these two, Understanding one another and Adjustment, are very important. Without them there is great danger. An example: for those who live in towns this is everyday experience! When a wife believes, “My husband is a good man,” then however late he comes home from the office, she does not misunderstand him. “The car may have broken down on the way, who knows! How much trouble he must be going through, poor man!” she thinks; and she waits for her husband with love. But if she does not understand her husband rightly, then even if he comes home from the office five minutes late, she takes him to task: “Why ever have you come so late?” Then a “Korean war” starts between the two of them. So, first of all, you must understand one another. Then Adjustment becomes very easy. In the family, among students and among teachers, Understanding is very important. When one teacher goes on leave, the class he was to take must be taken by another teacher who is free at that time. That way, the children are helped. In this way, teachers can help one another. But through the influence of this Kali age, today there is no unity at all among teachers or among students. When there is ‘co-operation’ among people, any great task at all becomes possible to achieve. But today, apart from ‘operation’, there is no such thing as ‘co-operation’. They are fostering disunity. (Swami, showing His handkerchief) If you are asked, “What is this?”, you will say, “It is a cloth.” How was this cloth made? Threads were made from cotton. By the joining of many threads the cloth was formed. If you separate out a single thread, you can easily snap it with your fingers; but when many threads join and form a cloth, it is strong.
