In plain words
Through Prema Alone Can the Mind Be Restrained
Some say, “Swami! I cannot do dhyāna.” To steady the mind, it is not dhyāna that is needed. In the name of dhyāna you tie down the body, but do you tie down the mind? First of all you must control the mind. How does it come under control? Only through Prema does it come under control. When there is Prema, anger does not arise in you, hatred does not arise, no doubts of any kind arise; you love even those who hate you. Then love and hatred are no more. That is the state beyond the pairs of opposites. That itself they called Blissful Life. In man there are the five kośas, called the annamaya, prāṇamaya, manomaya, vijñānamaya and ānandamaya kośas. Man today travels only from the annamaya kośa as far as the manomaya kośa. Beyond that, he does not know how to travel to the vijñānamaya and ānandamaya kośas. Vijñāna does not mean today's science. There is a great difference between science and Vijñāna. Science develops through the power of the mind and the power of machines. But Vijñāna is beyond these. It arises solely from the power of the Ātma.
The Example of Kṛṣṇa Paramātma
Before the Pāṇḍavas began the Rājasūya sacrifice, Kṛṣṇa went to Dharmaja and asked, “Well, brother-in-law! Are all the arrangements complete?” Dharmaja: “Kṛṣṇa! All the arrangements are complete. I have decided who is to do which task,” he said. “Then what service will you give Me?” asked Kṛṣṇa. Here He used the word ‘service’; He did not use the word ‘duty’. For service is bound up with the feeling of the one Ātma; ‘duty’ belongs to ‘duality’. Dharmaja said: “Swami! What is this, that You should serve us? Sit down and receive our services.” Then Kṛṣṇa said that He was one who serves, not one who is served. You too, recognise this truth. I am your servant, not your master.
