In plain words
Only the body, is it not! When they say “You wicked one!”, that is only a name given to the body! “My parents gave this body a name. My friends gave it a name. This fellow is giving it a name”: with this feeling you must take no notice. Just because someone calls you ‘wicked one!’, you do not become wicked, do you! If you really do have any faults, try to root them out. Hate no one, and love all as far as you can. Today in the world bad qualities such as hatred, envy and pride are growing. To be rid of them, the principle of Prema alone is enough. Whether your wishes are fulfilled or not, you must recognise the truth ‘Whatever happens is for our good’ and live by it. Good and bad are found together. So you must keep an even mind towards both. “Sukhaduḥkhe samekṛtvā lābhālābhau jayājayau.” The pause between two pains is pleasure. The more desires grow, the more Ānanda wanes. The more desires wane, the more Ānanda grows. So, if you reduce worldly desires and increase the desire for God, you will feel great ease.
“Patraṃ Puṣpaṃ Phalaṃ Toyaṃ”
You all know the episode of the weighing of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Out of selfishness, Satyabhāmā hoped to make Kṛṣṇa wholly her own. She tried to weigh Kṛṣṇa against the gold she had. She put in the Śyamantaka gem too. But Kṛṣṇa was not outweighed. Is God to be caught by gold and riches? Impossible. He is caught by Bhakti alone. He is caught by pure virtue alone. Satyabhāmā ran off and brought Rukmiṇī. Rukmiṇī, who was doing the worship of the tulasī at that time, came along with Satyabhāmā, holding a tulasī leaf in her hand. Learning through Nārada what had happened, she said, ‘For the form of Kṛṣṇa, the name of Kṛṣṇa is the right counterweight.’ Nārada objected to this: “Mother! Kṛṣṇa is here in bodily form. He is now in my keeping. If He is to be given to you, you too must give some object that has form,” he said. Then Rukmiṇī put the tulasī leaf in her hand into the scale: “Be it leaf, flower, fruit or water ... If it is true that You yield to whoever has Bhakti, O Kṛṣṇa! may You be outweighed by this tulasī leaf!” she said. The name of Kṛṣṇa weighed the form of Kṛṣṇa exactly. When she put in that tulasī leaf as well, the side of the scale where Kṛṣṇa sat went up. What does the leaf mean? The body itself is the leaf. The heart is the flower. The mind is the fruit. Tears of Ānanda are the water. These are what we must offer to God!
What I Have Is the Wealth of Prema!
Embodiments of Prema! Foster Prema. Then all your wishes will be fulfilled. Do not hate anyone. This is the right ideal. This is the important message I give you today. You must become embodiments of Prema, hearts full of Prema, filled with Prema through and through, and you must experience the Ānanda of Prema. This is the great gift I give you today. What I have is this wealth alone! None of these buildings is Mine. The devotees had them built. All these belong to the devotees. The property that is truly My own is Prema, Prema, Prema! That Prema I will give you as much as you want. In the end I will give even this body. Live in joy. Live as people who set an example. Then I will have Ānanda. Whatever you give, it is no Ānanda to Me. Prema alone is My Ānanda. My Prema is your good fortune. I hope you will treasure it.
