Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Neither the washerman nor the barber comes to his work. Even the cooks are not coming. What did you ask of God?” she asked. “I asked that the people in my kingdom should live a hundred years and that all should be equal,” said the king. But he came to know that his wish had not been right. He recognised that in God's creation there must be good and bad, high and low, and that only then can we live in the world. Hearing the king's words, the queen too went to the forest and did tapas with a pure mind and a steady feeling. Nārāyaṇa appeared and asked, “Mother! What do you want?” “Swami! What is the boon You have given my husband?” she asked. “He wished that all the people in his kingdom should live a full hundred years and enjoy comforts as he does. To that I have agreed,” said Nārāyaṇa. Then the queen: “Swami! Without a good king, what use is it for the people to live a hundred years? So grant the boon that the king too may live a hundred years,” she asked.

Nārāyaṇa, pleased with her large heart, gave the boon: “Mother! Not only the king and the people, you too will live a hundred years.” The queen came back and told the king what had happened. But the problem that had arisen from the wish the king had made at first remained just as it was. No one was coming to his work. The king went to the forest once more, did tapas and won Nārāyaṇa's favour: “Swami! It was a great mistake of mine not to heed Your word. As You said, it is not possible for all in creation to be equal. So grant the people of my kingdom each their own natural state,” he asked. Then Nārāyaṇa: “My son! I told you at the very start. But you would not listen to My word. Only when man follows the principle of God does lasting happiness come to him. Union with God itself is true happiness. Now go back to your kingdom. I am granting your people their former state,” He said. By the time the king entered his kingdom, everything had changed like a scene in a dream. How long does what is seen in a dream last? “The mansions and terraced houses seen in a dream are gone when the eyes open, are they not!” The whole kingdom was clean.
