Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

On this journey of life, the more you reduce the ‘luggage’ called desires, the more comfortably your journey will go. The mind alone is the cause of joy and sorrow. “Mana eva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ.” Only when you turn the mind towards God is Mokṣa gained.

But man becomes bound because he turns his mind towards the world. “Jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabham,” it has been said. Human birth is divine; it is hard to attain. Man is ruining this auspicious humanness. The body is the boon God has granted so that man may recognise his own true nature. So you must regard the body as an instrument and put it to good use.

See unity in diversity

Hands, feet, nose, ears, eyes... all these are limbs of the body. The body is a limb of society. Society is a limb of Prakṛti. Prakṛti is a limb of the Paramātma. Separate each limb, and there is no body at all. In the same way, when there is no unity among the various states, the nation cannot stand. Our ancients regarded the country itself as their home. “We are the people of Bhārata,” they would say with pride. But among the people of today such love of country has declined. “Mine is Maharashtra,” “mine is Tamil Nadu,” “mine is Karnataka” ... With narrow feelings like these, people are dividing the country. As a result, unity in the country is wasting away.

Embodiments of Prema! Foster the broad feeling, “We are the people of Bhārata.” All are one, and you must love all. You belong to the human race. So the world is breaking to pieces only because human values have been lost. Purity in thought, word and deed is humanness itself. So man must have purity in thought, word and deed. He must recognise the divinity that is in humanness. You yourselves are embodiments of Satya; you yourselves are embodiments of Prema. So you must not hate anyone, nor hurt anyone. Whomever you hurt, it is just as if you had hurt yourselves! Only when you see the oneness in all human beings will humanness turn into divinity.
