If you give me a little jaggery, some semolina and milk, I will make pāyasam,” he said. In those days sugar was not in use; people used jaggery alone. Garga cooked the pāyasam and poured it into a vessel. Being a devotee of Viṣṇu, he sat with his eyes closed, repeating the name of Viṣṇu. Meanwhile Kṛṣṇa came running from the room He was in and began to eat the pāyasam. Thinking some noise was being made, Garga opened his eyes and looked, and the sight that met him was Kṛṣṇa eating up the pāyasam.
At once he called Yaśodā: “Mother! Have you seen what your son is doing? I cooked pāyasam for myself to eat and offered it to Viṣṇu. Meanwhile Kṛṣṇa has come and is eating it up,” he complained. Yaśodā took Kṛṣṇa by the hand and pulled Him away: “Kṛṣṇa! Garga Maharṣi is our family preceptor. Is it right for you to eat before he has eaten? To receive with honour a guest and one who comes to our door is our duty, is it not!” she said. Then Kṛṣṇa: “Mother! I came only because he called me,” He said. Yaśodā to Garga: “Swami! They say you yourself called our boy!” she said. Garga: “Mother! I did not call Him,” he said. Then Kṛṣṇa: “Maharṣi! You yourself prayed to me to eat the pāyasam, and now is it right to push me away?” He said. Then Garga recognised the truth that Kṛṣṇa and Viṣṇu are both one, ate the pāyasam left over after Kṛṣṇa had eaten, and was content.
When was Kṛṣṇa born?
Kṛṣṇa was born in the 3228th year before Christ, in the month of Śrāvaṇa, on the 20th of July by the present English calendar, at about three o'clock in the night. Now the year 2001 is running. That means that, from Kṛṣṇa's birth to this day, 5229 years in all have gone by. Kṛṣṇa was born on the holy Śrāvaṇa Bahula Aṣṭamī, under the star Rohiṇī, and showed many wonders. In Kaṃsa's court there lived a demoness named Bālahantaki. She would tell no one her real name. Everyone called her Pūtanā. What was her work? Going round every village, looking into every house… In whichever house she heard a baby crying, she would enter that house, make the baby drink poisoned milk and kill it.
