Passage 9

In plain words

When I was in the Old Mandir, this Jayamma was a child of four. Wherever I went, she would come there holding a little towel in her hand. Her parents told her to do this. Only because she grew up close to Swami did pure feelings go on growing in her.

God is the perfect embodiment of Prema; He is selfless. Those who follow such a God must become selfless. Your hearts must be filled with Prema. When Prema fills your heart, the whole world becomes one; when the feeling of one Self arises, there is no room at all for hatred. Only when you recognise the truth “You and I are one” does the principle of Prema grow. Those who follow God and strive for divine Prema are very fortunate. In me, from foot to head, there is no selfishness anywhere. Follow such selfless Prema and become selfless too. In the world, the love of parents and the love of relatives and friends is mixed with self-interest, more or less. But in the Prema of God there is no self-interest at all. Why do you not yearn for such selfless Prema? You toil only for physical, worldly love. All these are negative loves. Divine Prema alone is positive. When you gain such Prema, you can achieve any great deed. Whatever anyone may think, it does not matter; when there is pure Prema in you, you need fear no one. Do not believe the words of this one and that one and drive divine Prema far from you. People are crows; they may say anything. You must take your heart as the ground and enquire.

I know nothing but Ānanda

My heart is pure. So I fear nothing. When there is no fault in us, why should we fear? My heart is full of nothing but Prema. There is no room for anything else to enter it. Yet those who cannot bear it and the envious keep making up many stories. All of them are for our own good. Blame and praise, scorn and honour: we must regard all of them as for our own good.
