Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

He whose heart is full of compassion, whose speech is adorned with truth, whose body is given to the good of others: what can Kali do to him?

Embodiments of Prema! What does education mean? What kind of education must we pursue? What is the chief aim of education? What is the distinctive worth of education? What result is the education of the present day bringing us? Into this pañcatantra, as it may be called, we must first of all enquire well. What concerns worldly matters is ‘education’; what concerns the inner feeling is ‘Educare’. In today's system of education, students learn nothing but matters that face outward. We must develop ‘Educare’, which concerns the inner feeling that seeks to give joy to all.

Learning without saṃskāra is worthless

Personality grows through saṃskāra alone, not through study. Along with education, saṃskāra is most essential. Education without saṃskāra is like a coin that will not pass, like a dark hovel. In a dark house only bats can live. In the same way, the heart of an educated man without saṃskāra becomes a home for bad qualities. Education without saṃskāra is like a kite whose string is cut. There is no telling when or where it will fall. In the same way, we cannot say whom education without saṃskāra will hurt, or whose home it will pull down. Only when saṃskāra goes along with it does learning shine. What does saṃskāra mean? Saṃskāra is nothing but putting the bad away and taking up the good. Making the heart broad is itself saṃskāra. Putting away bad qualities and bad thoughts, you must bring good qualities and good feelings to birth in yourself.
