Question: What is the role of computer technology in today's system of education? What is its effect?

This ‘technology’ looks to me like mere ‘trick knowledge’. I do not have much faith in these computers. I have been saying this not just today but for five years. I said that just as everything gets diseases, computers too would get a disease. Now it has come. Man must be a ‘composer’, not a computer. When the composer goes wrong, the computer goes wrong. Today people depend on the computer for every small matter. If they go to a shop and buy a sari, two pieces of blouse cloth, a towel and three handkerchiefs, they press a calculator to find out how much money it comes to in all. Instead of depending on computers even for such small matters, they could use the intelligence God has given, could they not! The things computers do are getting done. So I do not say that there should be no computers. But we must use them as befits each level. You should not develop a craze for them just because they have come newly.

In the old days every person worked bent to the task, from the time he rose at dawn until he lay down at night. But now what has happened? One computer is doing the work that a hundred people do. So because of one computer a hundred people are left without work. Because their hands are not full of work, they go astray. So if we are to give work to all, we must first reduce the use of computers. We must make every home a factory. Only then shall we prosper. If we depend on these machines too much, danger will come.
