Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

This is not spirituality. One must recognise the inner meaning of the holy days and their purpose, and act on it. “I am not a human being; I am God, who has taken a human form”: one must believe this firmly. Only then will the animality in one go away. But because the man of today has forgotten humanness itself, animality is running riot. Embodiments of Prema! Whatever the situation, you must guard your humanness. You must not waste your time keeping selfishness alone as your aim.

Who is the true devotee?

Once Śrīman Nārāyaṇa sent Nārada to find out who was the greatest devotee of all in the world and come back. Before setting out, Nārada: “Swami! What kind of person should I choose?” he asked. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa told him: “Whoever remembers the Name of God with a pure heart is the true devotee. However many worldly affairs there may be, one must keep one's aim fixed on God. One may say that he who forgets the Name of the Lord is a fool.” Then Nārada: “Swami! I am remembering the Name of the Lord without ceasing, am I not! Is there a devotee greater than I?” he asked. Ahaṅkāra had begun in him. To think, “I am the greatest devotee of all,” is itself a great Ahaṅkāra. “My son! Devotees like this are in every house in the world; they are to be seen at every inch. This is not true Bhakti. The Prema that has risen in the heart must be spread everywhere. Just as the food a man eats is digested in the belly and its essence is carried to every limb, so the divine power of the Lord's Name one has remembered in the heart must reach the eyes, reach the ears, reach the tongue, reach the hands, reach the feet.
