Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

“I am a Bhāratīya”: you must proclaim it with pride. This is the great degree you hold. You must recognise the inner meaning of the word Bhāratīya and act on it. People of Bhārata! You must lead lives that are an ideal, experience Ānanda, and strive to give that Ānanda to the people of every country. From ancient times, many great souls who practised human values and gave the world an ideal were born in our Bhārata. You must not forget the ideals of those great souls, or their sacred lives. You must not push them aside as just some old purāṇas. The great things in them are not so easily understood by you. You have been reading the Rāmāyaṇa for a long time. But have you been able to understand anything of Sumitrā’s good feelings, or of Ūrmilā’s purity? No. Ūrmilā was King Janaka’s own child. Sītā was the child found when the earth was being ploughed. She is the embodiment of Śakti. Because Sītā was born of the earth, she had a hundred per cent Magnetic Power in her. Because Rāma is the Paramātma, the power of attraction was complete in Him too. That is why Janaka gave Sītā to Rāma. He gave Ūrmilā to Lakṣmaṇa. Who is Lakṣmaṇa? Ādiśeṣa, who bears the whole world. Ūrmilā was a woman of great virtue. Today people remember the name of Kaikeyī and the name of Mantharā, but no one remembers the name of Ūrmilā. Ūrmilā’s nature was very tender. In whatever room she was when her husband left for the forest, she stayed in that very room until he came back. “My lord! Until you come back after fourteen years, I shall stay right here,” she said. She was skilled in painting. She gave all her time to painting alone. She set no desire at all on the world made of what is seen. I can tell it, but not everyone can understand. Sītā had put on a yellow sari for the coronation. In that same sari she spent fourteen years in the forest. Ūrmilā too was just so. Whatever sari she was wearing when Lakṣmaṇa left her and went, she stayed in that same sari until he came back after fourteen years.
