Passage 5

In plain words

There is no limit at all to desires. When desires are not fulfilled, anger begins.

For those who have anger no work bears fruit; harm comes upon them; doing sinful deeds, they end up being told, ‘Shame! Be off!’, mark this!

One's anger is one's enemy, one's calm is one's protection, kindness one's kin, one's happiness is heaven, one's sorrow, they say, is hell: this is the truth, O Sumati!

The reason man's lifespan is dwindling today is nothing but bad qualities such as desire, anger and hatred. Man, who should live a hundred years, is losing his life at 30 or 40. When he puts these bad qualities far from him, man can enjoy his full span of life; even if accidents happen, his life will not be lost. The very bad qualities within him come back as ‘reflection, reaction, resound’ and torment man. Desire, anger and hatred are not qualities of man; they are the qualities of animals. If he lets animal qualities into himself, man too becomes an animal. When he keeps in mind the truth, “I am not an animal, I am a man,” those animal traits can find no way into him.

Keep the foundation of brahmacarya secure

Human life is like a four-storeyed mansion. Its foundation is brahmacarya itself. Only when you keep this in sound condition will gṛhastha and vānaprastha be safe. But children today ruin three quarters of their lives in brahmacarya itself.
