Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If we wish to behold such a sacred power, we must earn sacred power.

If you seek to win the grace of the One whose form is that Śakti through some passing sādhanas or other, it will not come within reach. It will not be won. The temporary must have no place on the spiritual path. There must be Bhakti, unceasing and everlasting. There must be steady strength. Purity must enter into us. We must attain the state beyond the guṇas. There must be selflessness. Only then does this divine power become visible. Tomorrow let us understand well the principle of this divine power.

Mantras uttered with purity of heart gain great sanctity

Embodiments of Prema! No one can say that the power of the mantras uttered in this Veda Puruṣa Saptāha Jñāna Yajña is this or that. The brāhmaṇas who recite these sacred mantras in this jñāna yajña in our Prasanthi Nilayam are pure of heart. As an example of this I am telling you a small thing. All the Vedic paṇḍits rise at twelve o'clock. But the Sahasraliṅgārcana is still going on. Until it is over, one paṇḍit did not rise. Another paṇḍit is reading the Mahābhārata. He too did not rise. Four more who do the Veda recitation are still there. They too said, “You go; we will come after we have finished.” In this way each one would not stir until the task he had resolved on was complete. The one who does this Sahasraliṅgārcana stays there till two in the afternoon. Because brāhmaṇas with such purity of heart have gathered here, each mantra they utter has gained great sanctity. If we can grasp the meaning in these mantras, that is great good fortune. Even if we cannot grasp it, merely listening too is great good fortune. That is why listening comes first; after that, this is a sādhana that goes on from listening to merging. Listening, singing, remembering Viṣṇu, serving the feet, salutation, worship, service, friendship, the offering of the self: so it comes. Until one becomes a friend, the offering of the self is not possible. So we must do sādhana up to friendship.
