Passage 2

In plain words

But ‘Educare’ has nothing to do with books. It has to do with the knot of the heart; it teaches qualities such as heartfelt Prema, Satya and Dharma. Only education that blends these two stands as an example to the world. One is inward teaching, the other is outward teaching. Outward teachings belong to the ‘negative’ principle. Inward teachings belong to the ‘positive’ principle, which is Prema. Prema has no form. We must love those around us, receive their Prema, and experience Ānanda through Prema. Such inward teachings are most essential for man. ‘Educare’ is the very thing that forms a close bond of kinship between one person and another. But today such close bonds of kinship have withered away. What is in one person's mind, another does not know. What is in the mind they do not speak with the mouth. What they speak with the mouth they do not show in action. This can never be the mark of the truly educated. The proper study of mankind is man. That itself is true education. We must speak with the mouth the feeling born in the heart, carry it out with the hands, and give the world an example.

The great are one in mind, one in speech, one in deed; the wicked think one thing, say another and do another.

Man, who should be shaping himself into a great soul, is turning into a wicked one. The village folk, who know no schooling, lead their lives with great courtesy and in an exemplary way, while the very ones who are educated are turning into great thieves.

Modern education and its effect on students

Today the ones doing the country the most harm are none other than the educated! However much schooling one acquires, to experience the true principle of Jñāna one must develop the awareness of the Ātma. Today those known as educated and highly intelligent live in the towns. The unlettered, who know no learning of any kind, live in the villages.
