Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Īśvara took on such a form to teach Vairāgya to the world. “He goes from house to house begging alms, yet he has no roof of his own to shelter his head.” Pārvatī did not lose patience, asking how she was to live with a husband who begs. She did not run away, crying, “How am I to keep house in such a home?” “Your joy is my joy,” she said, and she went on following her lord. Each of them did his own duty, and so they went on bringing joy to the world.

Sorrow is the reflection of one's vices

The family of Pārvatī and Īśvara holds up an ideal to the world at every step. But such an ideal is seen in no family today. If the younger brother's wife puts on some fine jewel, the elder brother's wife is filled with envy. Instead of being glad at another's good fortune, people fall into unrest. Where there is unity and harmony with one another, neither unrest nor fear can arise. Fear arises only where there is some fault. When there is no fault of any kind in anyone, there is no fear at all. Man today falls into panic over every little thing. What is the reason? His own faults! If harmony with others is to grow, one must see to it that there are no faults. It is one's own faults that bring one unrest and heap sorrow upon one. In truth, man has no sorrow at all. Where has this sorrow come from? Who has given it? It is nothing but the ‘reflection’ of the vices within one, the ‘reaction’ of the evil thoughts within one!

Embodiments of Prema! You have been given a humanness that is holy and worthy of following; why should you sink under sorrow? Why should you be drowned in grief? All this is only the reflection of the faults within you. The instant you get up in the morning, you look at the newspaper. Wherever you look, unrest! Wherever you look, people killing one another, hatred, rage... All of this makes your mind unclean and throws you into unrest. From the moment you get up in the morning, you must keep your mind calm. You must experience Ānanda. There may be some troubles and worries.
