Passage 7

In plain words

The fruit of action depends on our thinking. As our thinking, so the fruit. As the action, so the body. As the deed, so the fruit. So, if we want to make the body strong in the right way, we must do good actions. Good actions alone bring good fruits. But it is of no use to fill yourself with bad feelings within and do good actions outwardly. The seed planted within comes up as a plant; a seed placed outside does not sprout, does it! In the same way, the ‘acting’ you do outwardly will not give the right fruit. If the resolves rooted within you are pure, their fruits too will be pure.

Keep far from bad company; join satsaṅga

You may be wondering what changes will come about in this new year. You will undergo only the fruit of the actions you have done. If you want good fruits, you must do good actions and join satsaṅga. ‘Sat’ means divinity that does not change in any of the three times. So satsaṅga is to experience the company of divinity. Listening for a little while to spiritual talks, singing bhajans... Things like these do not come under satsaṅga. ‘Bhadraṃ paśyantu’, ‘bhadraṃ śṛṇvantu’, ‘bhadraṃ kurvantu’ (see what is good, hear what is good, do what is good): these are the three chief mantras that Emperor Manu gave to man. Only when you live these three in your daily life will good results come to you. Only the bad feelings within you throw you into fear and panic. If you join bad company, those bad feelings grow all the more. So, first of all, you must keep far from bad company. Enter satsaṅga and develop it. Then you will see only good in everyone. Suppose a person who hates you comes face to face with you. ‘You wicked fellow! Will you do me harm?’: you must not flare up at him like this. ‘Hello, friend! How are you?’: you must greet him lovingly like this. Then even that enemy becomes your friend. Your greeting must be soft and sweet.
