Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If you greet him lovingly, the other person too will respond lovingly. If we want to cool the anger and hatred in the world, we must speak softly and sweetly. The pure Prema in us itself makes Prema grow in the other person. Through Prema alone does Śānti come about.

‘Where there is faith, there is Prema. Where there is Prema, there is Śānti. Where there is Śānti, there is Satya. Where there is Satya, there is God.’

So, if we want to gain Śānti, we must grow our faith in God and root out hatred.

Show gratitude first of all to your parents

Embodiments of Prema! You must regard faith as your very breath. You must not let bad feelings into your heart. You are experiencing God's Prema in such great measure. You are receiving happiness and joy from God. Are you showing gratitude fit for it? God expects nothing from you. He asks no return for the help He has given. He does not wait for any return you might give. But to show gratitude is your duty. You must carry out your duty. A man without gratitude is lower than a cruel beast. First of all you must show gratitude to your parents, who helped you to grow. “Mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava.” What gratitude are you showing to your mother, who carried you nine months, bore you, reared you and brought you up? What gratitude are you showing to your father, who bore many hardships, earned money, fed you and brought you up? Only when you show gratitude to your parents today will your children be grateful to you in the future. To speak good words before people, while filling yourself with bad feelings within... This can only be called demonic. Demons grow very bold by night. By day they have no such boldness. Night means the darkness of ignorance. Day means true wisdom. So those who long for the darkness called wickedness are demons, not human beings. The Veda proclaims, “Śṛṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putrāḥ.” Man is a son of immortality.
