In plain words
They went to the station, put the things in the train, saluted him and begged, ‘Sir, you must come back to Mysore soon.’ Radhakrishnan rejoiced greatly at those children's humility and obedience.
In ancient times students honoured their teachers and parents very highly. You must become such exemplary students. Only then will your birth bear fruit. You were not born merely for food, drink and such things. You must do service. Of what you eat, you must give something to the poor. A human birth that gives no charity is futile. Do not be proud that you have studied great studies. How many there are in this world who have studied greater studies than you! Being educated, you must live with honour; pride must not set in. Not only must you maintain yourselves with your earnings, you must also give fitting help to the poor. Even when you die, your name must remain for ever in the hearts of the people. Become such exemplary educated people. Study hard. Look after your parents. Give fitting help to the village people.
‘I went to school only to set an example’
A small matter. In my boyhood I went on studying, struggling in many ways. I had no need of studies. The whole essence of studies is known to me. But I kept going to school in order to set an example to others. Tying up rāgi saṅkaṭi in a bundle, I used to walk from Puttaparthi to Bukkapatnam. In the school there were some children of rich people. They used to come with rice and all kinds of curries packed in tiffin carriers. I had no tiffin carrier. I did not have even an aluminium tiffin carrier. When I set out with a little rāgi saṅkaṭi tied up in a bundle in a cloth, Gṛham Ammāyi (the mother of this body): “My son! I am not able to give you even a little rice!” and she would be very sad. ‘Mother! What matters is filling the stomach; what does it matter whether it is rice or saṅkaṭi!
