In plain words

He had heard Vidyāsāgar's name, but had never seen him. He had a small box in his hand. The moment he got off the train he began to shout, ‘Coolie, coolie!’ Noticing it, Vidyāsāgar said that he would carry the box himself. The officer looked at Vidyāsāgar, took him for some coolie and gave the box into his hands. When they reached the place, he took out his purse to pay the porter's charge. ‘I do not need any charge. I regard this as a service,’ said Vidyāsāgar, and went away from there. Later the officer went to hear Vidyāsāgar's talk. He was astonished to see everyone on the dais garlanding and saluting the man who had carried his box. Learning that he was Vidyāsāgar, he was very distressed that he had made so great a man carry his box. He went up to him and begged, ‘Please forgive me.’ Then Vidyāsāgar: ‘I myself asked for your box and took it, did I not! What use is it to be born in sacred Bhārata and not do even that much service? So you need not ask me to forgive you,’ he said.

All of you must know this. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a man of great learning, was President of our country. For some time he worked as a professor in Mysore State. He helped many poor students and earned a great name. He was transferred to Calcutta. He was packing his things to go by train. The students went to his house and packed the things themselves. They put them in a jaṭkā cart: ‘Sir! Please sit in the cart too,’ they begged. But Radhakrishnan did not agree. ‘Sir! If you do not sit, we will be very hurt,’ the students said, and pressed him. After he sat down, the students themselves pushed the jaṭkā cart all the way to the station. Those going along the road saw the sight: ‘Who is this gentleman? How the students honour him!’ they wondered. The students told them: “We are poor students. He is our teacher. He gave us the money he earned and put us through our studies. We are doing this work in gratitude for that.”
