In plain words
Courage and daring are gained only through God's prompting.
Students, girls and boys! You must face this world with courage. In the conditions of today, courage and daring alone are the right strengths for us. When you keep God before you, you can face any hardship with courage. ‘Life is a challenge: face it. Life is a game: play it.’ Today you have made great progress in the field of education. But what you must face above all is faint-heartedness. Fear and panic pursue you only because you give faint-heartedness room. Education does not mean acquaintance with books. ‘Sā vidyā yā vimuktaye’: that alone which helps you attain Mokṣa is true education. Only when you gain such education can you have courage and daring. Education is a great wealth.
Education gives humility; through humility one gains worthiness; through worthiness, wealth; through wealth, Dharma; and through that man attains happiness in this world and the next.
Who is the true scholar?
Once, King Janaka arranged a great assembly of scholars. A great scholar named Aṣṭāvakra came into that assembly. Seeing his form, bent in eight places, all the scholars burst out laughing. At once Aṣṭāvakra laughed twice as loud as they had. One scholar stood up: ‘Aṣṭāvakra! There is a reason for our laughing. When we saw your body, bent in eight places, we had to laugh. And may we know the reason for your laughing?’ he asked. Then Aṣṭāvakra: ‘Sirs! You laughed at the sight of my crooked body. I had to laugh at the sight of your crooked intellects. First set your intellects straight. I came in here thinking that some great assembly of scholars was taking place.
