Passage 7

In plain words

And yet, when someone is in need, you must be ready to give even your blood. Do not toil for selfish ends. Selfishness and self-interest are what make man base. Children today misuse the wealth their parents earned and cause them sorrow. Falling into bad habits, they waste their very lives. Under no circumstances should you cause your parents sorrow. You must cultivate good qualities and good conduct and bring them a good name. A good name does not come from wealth; it comes from character alone. Without character, however rich a man may be, he falls into disgrace. The rich may live in great mansions. But their minds have not the least peace or comfort. They strive and struggle, saying, “We must earn more, we must earn more.” We must use the wealth we earn for good deeds. We must conduct ourselves well. We must cultivate good ways of living. Only then will real Śānti come into our lives. Today everyone in the world longs for Śānti. Where is Śānti? It is right within you. You are supremely sacred. Love is within you. Peace is within you. You lose the sacred Prema and Śānti that are within you and fret to earn something or other; you long to build great mansions. Without right character, all the wealth you earn goes to waste. There is no wealth greater than character. Character only grows the more you spend it; it never runs short.

What goes with you is sin and merit, not riches and wealth

Students, girls and boys! You are pursuing high studies. But what are these studies for? Not for the service of money, but for the service of God! The service of God is the chief thing. The service of money will bring you down. There must be money, up to a point! But too much money brings unrest. What matters most to us is the wealth of Prema. We must develop it.
