Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only when you grow humility, Bhakti and faith will you become good. You need not become great. Be good. Great fame comes today and goes tomorrow. But a good name lasts for ever. So earn a Good name. Do not scramble after Greatness.

Strive to receive God’s Grace; do not crave the Grass of worldly things. Grass is what cattle eat. By longing for Grass, men are turning into cattle. We must earn Grace. If we win the grace of God, we have won everything. Students! The holy days of Sankrānti are beginning. What we must grow on this occasion is the virtue of honouring others and so receiving honour ourselves.

Bring a good name to your parents

(Calling a student onto the stage, Swami said:) This boy has come from America. He is studying in our school. Not only does he pass every class in the first division, he is also learning the Veda. Ask him for any section of the Veda and he recites it well. It is the good fortune of his parents to have such a blessed son! It is because of such parents that children too become virtuous. His parents used to live far away in America. There they had every comfort. But they gave it all up and brought their children here, so that in India they might learn good qualities, good sense and good habits.

Those children dearly love the culture of Bhārata. The father is overjoyed that among so many his son has earned a good name. (Pointing to the father:) This is the boy’s father. His mother works as a teacher in our primary school itself and is very happy. Because this boy conducts himself with honour and courtesy, his parents too receive great honour and respect. In this way every student must bring good honour to his parents.
