Passage 5

In plain words

If one tells you this Satya in great long ślokas, you will not understand it. If you recognise the experience that comes in your daily life, Satya becomes clear in a moment.

‘I am not this body. I am I.’

(When the hip bone broke) they took Me to the hospital; they said they had to operate. “Do whatever you like. This body is like a garment I have put on. It is not Mine; it is yours. So do whatever you like. The body is under your control, but I am under no one's control. I am I,” I told them. The doctors did all that had to be done. But I felt no pain at all. I did not give in to pain. Only when you pay them no heed, saying, ‘They come and they go,’ do all these pains of the body subside. Instead, with the delusion that the body itself is ‘I’: “How am I to live? How am I to bear it?” If you worry like that, you cannot bear the pains at all. So try to cut down your attachment to the body little by little.

Many of you do many kinds of sādhana. What does sādhana mean? You must give up attachment to the body entirely. You must experience the Ānanda of the Ātma. That comes only from Prema. If there is just this one thing, Prema, all these pains are wiped out. So foster Prema. When a person who hates you comes across your path, what do you do? If you too step aside with hatred for that person, the hatred between the two of you will only grow, not lessen. When that person comes towards you, greet him with Prema: ‘Hello, brother! How are you?’ Then Prema will arise in him too. Once Prema has come, there is no hatred whatever between the two. Whatever our feeling is, that very feeling is reflected in the other person too. “Yadbhāvaṃ tadbhavati.” So we must not keep the least hatred within us.

When the sky is thick with clouds, the sun may disappear from sight. If we wait patiently a while, the clouds move away and the sun appears. In the same way, when the dense clouds of evil feelings spread over the sky of our heart clear away, the pure principle of Prema shines forth.
