Passage 5

In plain words

At such a time some saw Kṛṣṇa. But Kṛṣṇa did not appear to either Yaśodā or Nanda. All the Gopīs gathered at Yaśodā's house. “Kṛṣṇa has come, they say. You have hidden Him away somewhere. Show us where He is,” they all kept clamouring. Kṛṣṇa did not appear to everyone; He would appear specially to only a few. In this way many wonders kept taking place.

Earlier our university boy said in his talk: as he was praying, “Swami! Will You not appear to me even once?”, Swami appeared to him alone and to no one else. “Swami! What use is it if You appear to me alone? You must appear to everyone! Otherwise they will not believe my words. They will mock me,” the lad asked Me boldly. “People are crows. They preach according to their own notions. But your fortune is your own,” Swami replied, and went away.

‘Thief of hearts, child of Yaśodā...’

One day Yaśodā caught hold of Kṛṣṇa: “Kṛṣṇa! There is all the butter You want in our own house, is there not? But You will not eat what I give You. What is at home does not taste good to You. You go to the cowherds' houses, steal butter and eat it. Your mischief is going beyond all bounds. My dear child! This is not right for You,” and she went on coaxing Him gently with kind words.

You will not eat what is given You; to the cowherds' homes You go, and butter, by the fistful, on the quiet You eat; because of You scandals have arisen, Kṛṣṇa ....

“Does the butter Your mother gives You with Prema not taste good to You? Does only the butter You go and take by stealth from other people's houses taste good to You?” Scolding Him so, she tied Kṛṣṇa to the mortar.
