In plain words
If we think of Ānanda all the time, there will be no such thing as sorrow for us. At no moment do I take any notice of troubles. Like passing clouds, they come and they go. As sorrow goes, Ānanda comes. As Ānanda goes, sorrow comes. We must not let go of Ānanda. When sorrow comes, we must call Ānanda to mind. Ānanda is within us. Why should we grieve? Should we grieve over the body? It is like a water bubble. And the mind, you say? It is always unsteady! Body is like a water bubble, mind is like a mad monkey. Don't follow the body, don't follow the mind. However many hardships and pains of the body come, take no notice of them. Why should we suffer for the sake of a body that is like a water bubble? It comes and it goes. What, once it has come, never goes again is Jñāna. Only when you have gained that Jñāna can you experience real Ānanda.
Santōṣam is outward; Ānanda is turned within
Embodiments of Prema! Prema is in you to the full. But you keep it shut away. That Prema has no limit at all. Nothing binds it at all. You use the Prema that is in you on worldly things. You do not know the taste of Prema. Love God. That alone is true Prema. Whatever comes and whatever goes, God alone neither comes nor goes. Happiness is union with God. Only when you are one with God will Ānanda come to you; while you stay apart, Ānanda will not be yours. Increase your Prema. Live your life with Prema. Only then will Ānanda well up from your heart. Once Ānanda has come, it only grows; it never wanes. The Ānanda of the heart alone is real Ānanda. Santōṣam means ‘Some-tōṣam’. It is only external; it comes like a ‘flash’, just for the moment, and goes.
