In plain words

He said nothing then, neither that Kṛṣṇa had gone to His own abode nor that the Yādavas had perished. The aged Kuntī Devī, as soon as she heard the news that Arjuna had come, sat up in bed. ‘My son! Arjuna! Is my Gopāla well? Tell me all the news,’ she asked. Arjuna fainted; then he got up and sat: ‘Mother! Kṛṣṇa is with us no longer,’ he wept, and told the whole story of what had happened. The moment he said that Kṛṣṇa had passed away, Kuntī Devī collapsed right there on the bed. Dharmaja laid his mother's head on his lap. All the other brothers were pressing the feet. Then Dharmaja: ‘What had to happen has happened. It is all nothing but Kṛṣṇa's play! Mother, get up!’ he said. But there was no movement in Kuntī. She had given up her life in the very thought of Kṛṣṇa.

Then Dharmaja sent for the paṇḍits and told them to make arrangements to crown Parīkṣit. Bhīma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva stood at Kuntī's feet. ‘Nakula! Sahadeva! We must go towards the Himālaya mountains. You two, get everything ready for our journey,’ he ordered. On one side the news that Kṛṣṇa had gone to His own abode, on the other Kuntī Devī's sudden death: Draupadī could not bear these two sorrows. Dharmaja told Arjuna to make the arrangements needed for Kuntī Devī's last rites. ‘Kṛṣṇa is gone; Mother, full of love, is gone. What use is there now in our living?’ lamented the Pāṇḍavas as they carried Kuntī Devī's body to the cremation ground. All the people followed, grieving. Dharmarāja walked in front, holding the fire. Even in those days there was the custom we have today. As they carried Kuntī's body to the cremation ground, the Pāṇḍavas: ‘Kṛṣṇa! Take our lives too,’ they lamented. When they reached there, Dharmaja, the eldest son, set fire to Kuntī Devī's mortal body.

After performing Kuntī's last rites, the Pāṇḍavas crowned Parīkṣit.
