In plain words
All of you together, look after that boy carefully. We want no more kingdoms, nor pleasures and riches. If you look after this boy carefully now, when he grows up he will protect all of you. He will give comfort and happiness to all. Parīkṣit is no ordinary boy. He is a boon granted to us by God. So look after him carefully. Everything happens only by God's decree. No one can stand in the way of God's will.’
In this way Draupadī and Dharmarāja gave the people courage and had Parīkṣit crowned. The affairs of state in those days were so subtle and so lofty. Rulers kept the rule that they must look after the people well, like their own children. The people too held devotion and trust toward the ruler. When there are people who regard the ruler as their own father, and a ruler who looks after the people as his own children, what could the kingdom lack!
As for how some people are today... They do not do it themselves, and they do not let those who do it get on. If they will not do it themselves, it is surely good to stand aside and let those who do it get on! This is just what Dharmaja did! In the matter of training Parīkṣit he did not interfere at all, but left that responsibility to Draupadī alone. She shaped that boy into a fine and able ruler. Today is there anyone who takes such care over children and teaches them? Even where there are those who teach, there are none who listen. But Parīkṣit was not like that. He grasped some things before anyone told him, and conducted himself accordingly. Whatever obstacles came his way, he stepped forward with courage and won victory. ‘Courage accomplishes everything.’ Courage itself is real strength. Relying on that strength, Parīkṣit led the country on the path of progress. Ministers, vassals and people all stood united and gave Parīkṣit fitting help and cooperation. Where there is ‘unity’, there will be ‘purity’.
