In plain words
Going abroad to earn money has become the one aim of students. Man toils for wealth, but who is he? What is his true nature? What is his birth? What is his goal? These things he does not recognise. Forgetting the aim of his own life, he toils in many ways for the sake of the world. However much a man talks, however many songs he sings, however much learning he gains, however many lectures he gives, what is the use if he does not know who he is? Today even great scientists toil only for name and fame, not for the good of the world. Science without spirituality is useless. There is no gain from science that has no spirituality. There was once a great scientist. He made gunpowder. It burned many people to ashes. Seeing this, he sank in grief: ‘Alas, was it not through me that such a disaster happened?’ In the end he went almost out of his mind and had to stay for some time in a mental hospital. Another scientist used to give lessons to a five-year-old child in the house next door. He used words the child could not understand and spoiled the child's mind. Hearing all that he said, the child lost its wits.
‘Sense’ is much needed along with ‘science’
As a rule, scientists come to know great matters but do not notice small ones. Newton was a great scientist. He kept a cat, and was very fond of it. When he had shut his door and was absorbed in his research, the cat would stand outside by the door and cry, breaking his concentration. So Newton had a hole made in the door, so that it could come in and go out. In time the cat had two kittens. Then he called the carpenter again and told him to make two more holes in the door for the kittens. Then the carpenter, ‘Sir! The one hole that is there is enough for them to come in too. They can come one after the other’, he said. What even an unlettered man knows, a great scientist does not!
