In plain words
Though they have studied through to their M.A.s and B.A.s, though they are elders who have won renown, though they have riches and are given to good charity, though they are the meritorious who have won fame on earth, though long life and health are theirs without fail, though they are men of perfect strength, though they do japa without ceasing, in plenty, though they are brāhmaṇas who have learned the Vedas, they are never the equal of the devotees; without worshipping God, rich Bhakti does not come. What more than this shall I make known? O members of this assembly, good souls counted among the virtuous!
However much material learning you master, if you forget the spiritual principle there is no gain in it. But man today studies only material learning and toils for a living, to keep his family. Today even family life has turned into a big problem. To put a small boy in school, they ask a fee of twenty or thirty thousand. Wherever you go, whatever you do, everyone toils for money alone.
