Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

To master dama, we must control the senses. Our senses wander about as they please. Why did God give us ears? To listen to the talk of this one and that one?! We must not listen to any bad words. We must listen only to good words.

“Do you know why the tongue was given? For speaking words? No, no. To sing the praises of the God of gods, the Saviour of the afflicted!”

The tongue tastes the food we eat and, if it is good, sends it in; if not, it spits it out. In the same way, through the senses we must take in only the good and cast out the bad.

God is the Witness

You think that God gives hardship to some and happiness to others. Hardship or happiness, each one experiences them according to their own karma; they are not handed out by God. God does not involve Himself in anything. He is only the Witness. He is not answerable for sorrow, nor for happiness either. If you greet the person before you lovingly, ‘Friend! Are you well?’, he too greets you lovingly, ‘I am well, friend! How are you?’ If you speak rudely, he too answers you rudely. Word for word, look for look! Whatever kind of ‘action’ we perform, the same kind of ‘reaction’ comes back to us. ‘Reaction, resound, reflection’: these three are what each one makes for himself; they are not given by God. Whatever expressions and gestures you make standing before a mirror, your reflection appears to you just so. Whatever words you speak standing in a hall, those very words come back to you as a ‘resound’. Whatever thoughts your mind thinks, their ‘reflection’ itself comes to you from outside.
