Passage 6

In plain words

So first weigh the good and the bad of the deeds you do. When it strikes you, ‘This is bad,’ do not take it up. Only when you conduct yourself so will you become a true devotee, a liberated one.

“Without undergoing the karma one has done, no one at all gets free, brother! On what day, in what way, who can tell?! The undergoing is certain, brother! Even one as great as Rāma, parted from His beloved Sītā, wept like a common man, brother!”

All the good and bad we experience are only the fruits of the karmas we have done, nothing else. Good and bad are in the mind itself, not in anything else. You need not pull out the bad and throw it away. If you forget the bad, the good will grow in you.

Only what we have done comes back to us

Young men! This, above all, is what I wish to tell all of you today. You should not think that a new year has begun today and that it will bring new results. The results you get depend on your qualities and your conduct. Here is a small example: a herdsman drove his cattle in among three hills. While the cattle grazed there, he sat down in one spot and sang aloud to himself. Because it was hill country, the song came back to his ears. Not grasping that this was the echo of the song he himself was singing, the simple lad: ‘Who is that fellow? He is copying my voice and singing the very song I sang,’ he thought. ‘Who are you?’ he shouted loudly. From somewhere came back the very words, ‘Who are you?’ He grew angry. After he went home, he did not eat that day.
