In plain words
He followed Rāma constantly. He held Rāma alone to be his all. Offering up every burden of his, wealth, wife and all the rest, he surrendered to Rāma.
Even the place where we move about leaves its mark on our mind
As Sītā, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa were roaming in the forest, the moment they came to a certain place, unheard-of wicked notions arose in Lakṣmaṇa. At once, to Rāma: “Rāma! Why these hardships for You? Why make innocent Mother Sītā suffer so much? This very instant let us return to Ayodhyā. Come!” he said. Sītā was greatly astonished. Rāma knew everything, so, smiling, He called him close, “Lakṣmaṇa, come here,” and sat him down right beside Himself. Lakṣmaṇa saw his mistake and asked, “Brother! Why have such bad feelings, which never came to me before, entered me today?” Then Rāma: “My dear! There is no fault of yours in this at all. This is a place where rākṣasas roam. That is why demonic feelings entered you,” He said. Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are. Whatever kind of people you make friends with, feelings of that very kind enter you. So keep away from bad company. Join good company. Mix and move freely with good people. Then good feelings will keep coming to you too. ‘As the feeling, so it becomes.’ The result follows the feeling.
Śānti is not to be found set apart in some one place in the world. It is all within us. Our body itself is one great world. Within it all kinds of qualities live mingled together. Changing it for the good lies in our own hands. You may ask, “Why should God not change it?” The Paramātma does not interfere in this at all. There is no need for Him to teach you, “This is good, that is bad.” Your own feelings keep teaching you. Whatever you eat, that very thing comes back to you as a belch. If you eat a mango, will you belch up a cucumber?! So only what is within you comes to you; what is not in you cannot come.
