In plain words
To get good marks in the examination God sets, you must take up a firm vow. You must keep a vow in your studies too. But you must not be content with getting good marks. You must see to it that there are no bad remarks. Only then does education gain its true worth.
Students! Every day I teach you so many things. But you give it no thought at all. You forget why you have come here. You must recognise that first of all. You came for one thing, and the work you do is another! This brings no result whatsoever. You long for idli and sambar. But you walk into a military hotel. You came to make your heart pure and ripe. But you enter into actions that make the heart impure. The reason? Pollution of the mind, nothing else! You must not let your mind or your ‘thoughts’ become tainted in the least. All that our elders taught is of just this kind! You are modern students. Along with modern education you must hold on to the ancient tradition. Only when you conduct yourselves in that way will you gain the Ānanda you seek. Only when you have earned this Ānanda will your life be blessed. “For happiness here, the learning that wins gold; for happiness hereafter, Brahmavidyā.” We have come to learn Brahmavidyā. Not merely to learn the worldly kinds of learning. Along with worldly learning you must learn spiritual learning as well. You must journey through both of these in an even balance. Only then will you attain the fulfilment that befits you.
