In plain words
Today in particular I have not set out to speak to you about God or about spiritual matters. All I want is for you to lead your daily life as a life of Satya. Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā: these five life-breaths are within you. Kāma, krodha, lobha, mada and mātsarya lie on the surface. You must push them out and bring out the human values within. What must you do to bring up the water in a well? If you tie a rope to a vessel, let it down into the water and pull the rope up, the water too comes up along with the vessel. So, in the well that is your heart, there is the holy water of the human values. To bring them out, you must acquire the strong rope of faith. But ‘without the two eyes called faith, people today have become blind upon the earth’. We must not become blind. Only when we strengthen faith does humanness turn into divinity. Everyone can give ‘speeches’. Merely hearing these words does not bring us contentment. We hear, and we forget. Instead, we must put into practice what we have heard. Above all, you must keep your faith secure. Only when the rope of faith holds secure can the ‘vessel’ let down inside come up filled with Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema. This is what was called ‘Educare’. ‘Educare’ means that we must draw up what lies within. Beyond that, Educare is not something that exists apart, outside. It is not something you can get by buying it. It is not something that grows because teachers speak of it. You must develop it by yourself. Only then does ‘self-realisation’ come. What is needed first of all for ‘self-realisation’ is ‘self-confidence’. For ‘self-confidence’ to come, one's qualities must be pure.
Embodiments of Prema! The studies you pursue may help your intellectual skill. But what gives us true Ānanda is ‘Educare’. That is the very basis of our life. Book learning is not what matters most. Even those who have passed their MAs and BAs and become great people of renown must take up Educare as the main thing. Without ‘Educare’, however much you study, there is no benefit. You may take degrees, but without ‘Educare’ that is no education at all. What use are the studies you pursue? These are studies pursued to fill the belly. There are people in the world who have pursued the loftiest studies. What are all of them doing? Are they fostering Ahiṃsā in any way? Are they upholding Dharma in any way? Are they nurturing Śānti in any way? Are they at least at peace themselves? No. They cannot love even their own children. First of all, attain Prema. Share your Prema with everyone. Only then will you come to taste the principle of Prema in your own experience. All powers are present in students. The five elements, the five senses and the five sheaths are very secure. If you do not put them to good use, you will grow weak. Once you have grown weak like that, you cannot achieve anything. On the spiritual path firm determination is needed.
Whatever I have taken hold of, I have held it fast: stay just so until the hold wins through. Whatever I have longed for, I have longed for it truly: keep on worshipping until the longing is fulfilled. Whatever I have asked for, I have asked for it in earnest: do not let go until what was asked is given. Whatever I have set my mind on, I have set it there wholly: do not move until the thought is fulfilled. Either He, unable to bear the pleading, must save, or you, lost to the body, must cease; that, and nothing else; but to stop halfway and turn back is not the devotee's vow.
