Embodiments of Prema!

Man today prides himself, ‘I have studied all the śāstras; many are the things I have studied,’ yet he himself is unable to grasp the secret that lies within studies. In today's studies, apart from worldly and physical matters, moral, dhārmic and spiritual matters are not to be seen at all. In the world today, mothers and fathers go through all kinds of hardship for the sake of educating their children. But what is education? No one is making any effort to recognise that. Merely by reading many books, merely by being able to speak well, a man cannot earn the name ‘educated’. This is only knowledge of letters, and nothing else.

The test Kṛṣṇadevarāya set the Aṣṭadiggajas

In the court of Śrī Kṛṣṇadevarāya there were eight poets famed as the Aṣṭadiggajas: Allasāni Peddana, Nandi Timmana, Mādayyagāri Mallana, Dhūrjaṭi, Ayyalarāju Rāmabhadra, Piṅgaḷi Sūrana, Rāmarājabhūṣaṇa and Tenāli Rāmakṛṣṇa. Once Kṛṣṇadevarāya addressed those eight poets: “You are all great scholars, sons of Sarasvatī. But I am asking you a question. Can any one of you, whoever it may be, join five letters belonging to five different languages and say a sentence that has meaning?” he asked. He said that those five letters must give one and the same meaning in their own languages. He announced that he would grandly honour the poet who gave the answer to his question by the next morning.
