Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Do not waste the education you have had. It becomes worthwhile only when you bring it into the service of society. (Pointing out one of the students) This boy came from Himachal Pradesh. They come from America, Russia and from who knows where else. Many Russians are coming. What Bhakti they have! What Bhakti! What Bhakti! I told them, “You must go from house to house and serve food,” and sent them to the villages along with our college boys. Going to each house, they give food and clothing. Taking part in this service, they experience great joy. The joy the people in the villages are receiving is beyond description.

What gift is greater than the gift of food?! What God is there beyond mother and father?! What truthful conduct is there beyond japa and tapas?! Look: what gain is greater than the company of the good?! What enmity is worse than anger?! What Dharma is higher than compassion?!

Only one endowed with compassion is a real human being. One without compassion is unworthy of the very name of human being. We have been born as human beings. We must not say ‘I am a human being’ and behave like beasts. Fighting and killing one another are the marks of beasts, not the marks of human beings. A selfishness not seen even in monkeys is seen in man today. Apart from selfishness, concern for others is nowhere to be seen. Whatever he does, he keeps only his own selfish ends and his own advantage in view. Every field, music, literature, politics and the rest, has been polluted by selfishness.

Embodiments of Prema! All of you, keep a good mind and love one another. Hate no one. Wish for the welfare of all. Only when the whole world is happy can we too be happy. If the world is without happiness, how will happiness come specially to us alone!
