Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Give water free. Give food free. I am ready to give you whatever you need.

What gift is greater than the gift of food? What god is there above mother and father? What truthful character is there beyond japa and tapas? What Dharma is greater than compassion? Look: what gain is greater than the company of the good? What enmity is worse than anger? What disease is worse for a man than debt? What death on earth is worse than ill fame? What wealth is there, at any time, above fame? What ornament surpasses remembrance?

Remembrance alone is our true ornament. You must satisfy your parents. Every day you must bow at their feet. At the very last, you must pour out a little water for them with your own hands. Born as their sons, you must win that good name. Only then will your life be fulfilled. Even when your parents are no longer here in the body, think of them as still being with you. As soon as you rise at daybreak, bow to them. What is the tarpaṇa you owe them? Making bobbaṭṭu and gārelu, calling a brāhmaṇa and serving him… It is not this. It is enough to remember your parents once with gratitude and shed tears of joy; that itself is the true tarpaṇa. Repay your debt to your parents. That itself is great merit. That itself is great good fortune. Hoping that you will enjoy such good fortune, and blessing you, I bring my long discourse to an end.
