Passage 8

In plain words

We must teach the children to notice how far each thing is needed and to conduct themselves accordingly. Only then will they stay within bounds. Keeping the children under control is the parents' responsibility. We must explain clearly to the parents too what the Sai system of education is. For some parents may know nothing about this system of education. The doubt may even arise in them what their children are being told at school, and what it all is. So the students who study in a Sai school must also explain the Sai system of education to their parents in detail.

Some children, afraid of their parents, even tell lies. If they get 20 marks in an examination, they come home and say they got 50. The parents believe their words but do not go to the school and see. Now and then they must go to the school and check whether what the children say is right or not. They must not let the children know of it. At least once a week they must go to the school and watch carefully how the children are behaving and how they are studying. In the villages, parents punish the children when it is needed and teach them good discipline. But those in the towns, especially those who are officers, take no care at all of the children. They must take care that the children do not stray onto the wrong path.

When children have nothing else to do, they must sit down with their books before them to study. But they do not do that; they roam the bazaars like dogs. Such a one is no ‘student’, only ‘stupid’! Children must not wander about outside needlessly. They must stay at home and study, guarding their honour and good name.

Moreover, if children spend as they please, parents must keep them somewhat in check. They must say, ‘It is not good for you to spend like this.’ They must say which is right and which is wrong, and set them straight. At home, parents and children must live together in harmony. In some homes the children do not listen to what the parents say, and the parents do not listen to what the children say.
