41From the subtle element of form as it altered, from fire, urged on by fate, the subtle element of taste came to be; from that, water, and the tongue, which takes hold of taste. 42Astringent, sweet, bitter, sharp, sour and more besides: one taste is broken up by the changes in the things it is in. 43Wetting, binding into a lump, filling, keeping alive, refreshing, softening, taking heat away, and being there in plenty: these are the workings of water. 44From the subtle element of taste as it altered, from water, urged on by fate, the subtle element of smell came to be; from that, earth, and the nose, which reaches smell.
45Mixed, foul, fragrant, mild, harsh, sour and the rest, each apart: one smell is broken up by the unevenness of the parts of things. 46Making things be, being the standing place of Brahman, holding things up, marking off what is, and the breaking out in it of the qualities of every being: these are the workings that mark the earth. 47That whose object is the special quality of the sky is called hearing; that whose object is the special quality of the wind they know as touching. 48That whose object is the special quality of fire is called the eye; that whose object is the special quality of water they know as tasting; and that whose object is the special quality of earth is called smelling.
49The property of the earlier is seen in the later, since it goes along with it. So the marks that set things apart are all to be seen in the earth.
