So spoken to by his beloved, the mountain's guardian, dear to his friends, answered with a laugh; for he had been reminded of those arrows of foul speech, cutting to the quick, that Ka let fly before the makers of the world. The revered one said: What you say is right enough, fair one. Even uninvited, people do go among their kin, provided no fault-finding eye has been raised in them by anger and by that strong drunkenness of taking the not-self for the self. Learning, austerity, wealth, body, age and birth are six good qualities in the good; in the worst of men they work the other way about. With memory struck down and their sight spoiled by pride, they stand stiff and do not see the splendour of their betters.

You should not go to the houses of such unsteady people for kinship's sake, people who look at those who come to them with a crooked mind, their eyebrows raised and their eyes full of resentment. A man wounded by his enemies' arrows, lying with his limbs torn and his heart smarting, is not hurt as he is by the foul words of his own people when their minds are crooked; struck to the quick, he burns day and night. Clearly, fair-browed one, you are the dear one among the daughters of that high-standing lord of creatures, and held in esteem. Even so you will get no honour from your father, since it is your taking shelter with me that scorches Ka.

His heart scorched and his senses in distress at the greatness of those who stand as witness to a man's mind, unable to climb easily to the high place they hold, he hates them, as the demons hate Hari.
