The king's doubt about Priyavrata· Verses 1–5

1Sage, Priyavrata was the Lord's own and took his pleasure in the self. How then did he take pleasure in a house, which is the root of bondage to work and of ruin? 2Surely, bull among the twice-born, men such as those, whose clinging is loosed, ought not to become so settled in houses. 3Sage among brahmins, the great, whose hearts are at rest in the shade of the feet of him whose renown is highest, have no longing and no thought for a household. 4This is a great doubt in me, brahmin: that a man held by wife and house and sons and the rest came to his perfection, and that his mind on Krsna never fell away. 5Well said. Those whose minds have entered the honey of the beautiful lotus feet of the Bhagavan, whose renown is highest, do not for the most part leave their own most auspicious road, whose story is dear to the highest swans who are the Lord's own, though something in the way may check it a little.
