14Leaving behind those who have come to grief here and there, and taking up the newborn, that caravan goes round and round even now; and no one here, hero, reaches the far end of the road, or yoga. 15Men of spirit who have beaten the elephant lords of the quarters, all of them bound in enmity on this earth by saying mine, lie down on the field of battle; and they do not go where one goes who has laid down the rod and let his enmity go. 16Sometimes he clings, with a creeper for the hold of his arms, wanting the birds that shelter there, whose notes are not yet clear; and sometimes, frightened by the wheeling of lions, he makes friends with cranes and herons and vultures.
17Cheated by them, he goes in among a flock of swans; not liking their ways, he goes over to the monkeys, and with the sport of that kind his senses are well pleased, and looking at one another they forget that there is an end to the time. 18Meaning to play among the trees, fond of his wife and children, brought low by coupling and helpless in his own binding, he sometimes falls carelessly into a mountain hollow, catches hold of a creeper, and hangs there in fear of an elephant. 19Somehow got free of that trouble, tamer of foes, he goes back into the caravan again; and the man set down on this road by the unborn one wanders on, and to this day knows nothing at all.
