Then Indra took up the thunderbolt made by Visvakarman, brimming with the sage's powers and filled with the Bhagavan's own fire, and, surrounded by all the hosts of gods, he shone on the back of the king of elephants, praised by companies of sages, gladdening the three worlds, it seemed. He rushed at Vrtra to cut him down, Vrtra who was ringed round by the leaders of the demon ranks and by his own strength, king, as angry Rudra rushed at the Ender. Then between the gods and the demons there was a battle utterly terrible, on the Narmada, at the opening of the Treta, in the first age. With the Rudras, the Vasus, the Adityas, the two Asvins, the fathers and the fires, the Maruts, the Rbhus, the Sadhyas and the All-gods around him, the lord of the Maruts,

Sakra, holding the thunderbolt and shining in his own splendour: seeing him, the demons with Vrtra at their head could not bear it, king, in that fight.
