He had no child and his mind was low, and at Narada's telling he went for refuge to Varuna: Lord, let a son be born to me. If he is a hero, great king, I will sacrifice to you with him. So be it, said Varuna; and a son was born to him, Rohita. A son has indeed been born; with this one, dear one, sacrifice to me, he said. When the animal is past ten days old, then it becomes fit for the offering. And when the ten days were past, he came and said, Sacrifice. He said: When the animal's teeth have come, then it becomes fit. The teeth have come; sacrifice. He answered him, and then said: When his teeth fall out, then it becomes fit.

The animal's teeth have fallen out; sacrifice, he said. He said: When the animal's teeth grow again, then the animal is clean. They have grown again; sacrifice. He answered him, and then said: King, when a kshatriya can put on armour, then the animal is clean. So, out of love for his son, his mind tied up by that fondness, he cheated the time with one thing and another; and the god, spoken to like this again and again, watched him.
